Life on the Family Farm in Montana: A Ranch Wife’s Perspective
Ah, life on a Montana family farm! It’s a rhythm all its own, a symphony of swathing, haying, and cattle tending. Each day is a blend of hard work, hearty meals, and the simple joys that make it all worthwhile.
This year, we’ve been blessed with good rainfall, and you can see it in the lush, green fields. Of course, good rainfall means our days are packed from sunup to sundown, especially during the hot summer days. Our crew is always busy, everyone has something to do. It’s a sight to behold when the whole clan works together—though, I’ll admit, it’s not without the occasional heated disagreement. That’s just part of farm life. We argue, we make up, and we get the job done.
Farming comes with its challenges. Equipment breakdowns are a regular headache, and tight budgets mean we’ve got to be resourceful and make do with what we have. Allergies hit some of us hard, especially during haying season, but we push through, knowing the land depends on us.
Despite the hard work, everyone finds time for the fun that they enjoy. There’s nothing like an afternoon motorcycle ride, fishing, or playing in the creek on a summer afternoon. Ukuleles, guitars and an icy drink on the porch swing, picking Juneberries, and hammock naps are a cherished reprieve from the heat. Our farm dogs love summer too, especially swimming in the lake and vanilla ice cream cones from Dairy Queen!
These moments are the balm that soothes our tired bodies and rejuvenates our spirits.
Often, our day starts with a hearty breakfast. Cream of the West roasted grain hot cereals, a Montana staple since 1914 are a favorite around here. The organic 7-Grain hot cereal is particularly beloved. I enjoy creating savory cereal recipes from our recipe collection on our website for evening meals or Sunday gatherings, like Old West Tamale Pie, Ranch Chili, and 7-Grain Rolls. They’re the kind of meals that stick to your ribs and give you the energy to face the next day’s work.
Life on the farm is demanding but rewarding. It’s a life where every family member plays a crucial role regardless of what their job is, where the land teaches us patience, resilience, and the importance of togetherness. It’s not always easy, but as the sun sets and we settle for the night, there’s a deep sense of satisfaction knowing we’re living a life true to our roots and values.
